Some awesome stuff I have found as of late.

I’ve been soul crushingly busy these past few weeks with work and more work and then some other extra work on top of that. While I have had no time to drop any new process posts or recommendations I have felt like a bit of a magnet for awesome comic related goodness lately. Here’s a random selection of things and places you should check out. I post a lot of these little things I find on twitter so if you’d like to get more updates on what I’m up to go ahead and follow me.

The Ruined Cast

First off I happened upon Dash Shaw’s latest project last night. He’s doing a full length animated featured called “The Ruined Cast” that looks to be absolutely stunning. I watched this at least ten times last night. Do yourself a favor and wear some headphones.

Check out this article on the project from Indie Wire as well as the process blog. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

Center for Cartoon Studies

If any of you are looking to get an MFA in comics this is place to go. Past visiting faculty have included Alison Bechdel, Ed Brubaker, Ivan Brunetti, James Kochalka, Jason Lutes, Scott McCloud, Seth, Art Spiegelman, Craig Thompson, and Chris Ware.

Gesture Drawing Practice Tool

This is an online app from pixelovely for gestural figure drawing. You have the option to pick human or animal, nude or clothed and the time you want each slide to appear. All you have to do is practice! Super awesome for people like me who have no time (or access) to get to an actual live figure drawing session.

Fantastic Butterflies

As I already mentioned I’ve been busy on an unhealthy scale lately. In need of a break I walked to local comic shop in search of something distracting, joyful, and fun. True to form James Kochalka didn’t disappoint. Fantastic Butterflies is a very quick read that will leave you speechless, happy, and in a strange state of peace. I guess that what’s you happens when you mix cancer, dance parties, robots, exploded testicles, time machines, depressed dogs, and fantastic butterflies together.

Best impulse buy ever.

If you like Kochalka you can check out more of his work at American Elf where he updates very frequently and also contact him on his forum where he has proven to be an all around awesome guy.

Kellie has always been a huge supporter of 2816 Monument. Here she is with her wife while on vacation with a certain Captain Kittenface. Thanks Kellie!

Kellie is also the author of the political webcomic The Beaglez

Josh was one of the first webcomickers I met after starting 2816. He and his comic have proven to be far more thoughtful and dedicated to the craft than I ever thought possible in webcomics. Thanks Josh for breaking down some of my shitty prejudices. I present to you the Multi Josh.

New fan art and no more ads (sort of)

First off I got some amazing art from some friends this week. I just created a new page where I will be posting drawings, pictures, doo-dads and doo-hickies related to 2816. If you send me something I’ll post it along with your name and a link to your site if you want. Check out the newest crop by Jared Cullum, Josh Bauman, and Dan Long.

Next up, I’ve decided to remove ads from the site. I toyed around with adsense for about a month and made maybe a buck. I had never expected to stick around with adsense anyway as it was just a placeholder until I got approved for Project Wonderful. I love Project Wonderful but the revenue I’m getting doesn’t come anywhere near close enough to justify the inconvenience to everyone. I hate checking in on the site only to find some flashing blinking ad running for a penny a day. I don’t think a hundred bucks a day would be worth that.

Instead of paid ads I will be using the space to promote my own projects as well as those of others I think you may actually like. I won’t be getting paid for any of this but it’s not like I’m losing much so it’s not a big deal. If you have a project you think I’d be interested in shoot me a line and if I think it fits I’ll toss up a link for you in the sidebar. I can’t guarantee that I will accept everything but I promise I’ll at least get back to you.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to help Kittenface and Calypso catch and frenzied Captain Remarkable. Adios!
